Acid Reflux Disease

Couldn't sleep at all tonight.. Heartburn has been keeping me up. I've been dealing with heartburn since I was a little tyke.. nasty ailment it is. My largest irritation, really. What's worse is the lack of any long-term acid reflux treatment.
Pepto Bismol is only temporary, and ends up causing "black-tongue" (as you may recall from an earlier post).. Pepcid Complete and Tums are of course only temporary, and leave a chalky taste in your mouth.. I did a two-week course of Prilosec but the relief was short-lived.. a few days after finishing I was back at square one.

...*sigh*...

I need an efficient treatment for acid reflux disease. Something that not only works but also has staying power. I know I'm not the only one who is looking for this. I want to ask my readers.. how many of you are struggling with acid reflux disease? If not acid reflux are there any chronic "annoying" illnesses that you are suffering from? I know many people have horrible diseases and disorders and I should and do feel very fortunate and blessed to be free of those (knock on wood).. but this is like not being able to stop hiccuping! OK maybe not that bad... :P

While I've heard people say it's what you eat, I have to confess I still get heartburn all the time no matter what I eat (just alternating levels of intensity). Some of you will say I should see a doctor (I mean c'mon I'm losing sleep over this lol), and I have. He didn't really tell me anything new, just recommended the Prilosec. Normally I don't get upset about things easily but this is something I feel I can and should have a level of control over. And it's been a friggin' decade and a half!   -_-

So...

What do you guys use for heartburn? Is anyone suffering daily? Has anyone made a complete turn-around? Again, thank you to my loyal readers! ^_^

PS -Wow I almost forgot... Happy Valentine's Day! :P

  9. Prilosec is meant as a long-term solution. In order for it to work you need to continually take it. If the OTC worked for you during the two weeks you took it then your doctor could prescribe on of the lower dosages of the prescription strength. If you have insurance you could save a good bit of money that way.

  13. Can't say much but you got this.. you got this! Your heart is burning because it's fighting strong and forever long (even though the heart has nothing to do with heartburn).

  14. Dont take any pills, just drink some more milk and keep a food/drink diary to find out what causes it.

  16. When I was living in Korea I had regular pain and was repeatedly diagnosed with chronic tonsillitis and they wanted to remove my tonsils. I had a sore throat for nearly a year and it made me a very irritable person--my job was teaching kids and I couldn't make it through the day without A LOT of pain.

I got blood work done at a real hospital, nothing wrong--low white blood cell count. Cut back on caffeine, ate less spicy foods, but it just went away on its own for no reason. I'm glad it went away but I never have understood exactly why.

They thought mine was acid reflux but it was only while I lived in Asia. Strange? I'm sorry yours is permanent. Do you drink a lot of coffee?

  17. personally zantac 2x daily should help ya as long as you keep taking it. also during an attack eat some yogurt. it'll help relieve symptoms quickly and it has some cultures that will coat your stomach, and give you some relief for a little bit. better than chalky antacids imo.

  20. I know it tastes like chalk, but Mylanta works pretty good at easing heartburn and an aching stomach. A half a cup of milk works for me though when I feel heartburn coming on.

  22. My friend had the same thing. He would just randomly spurt up some random fluid and continue what he was doing. Was funny but he said it was like he threw up, he couldn't help it haha.
