LASIK

OK! So after reading everyone's suggestions, I have decided to do a little bit of research on LASIK. I feel like I'm a pro on the subject now that I've done my homework, so I'll try to explain what I've learned. ;)

LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is basically surgery that attempts to correct myopia(near-sightedness), hyperopia(far-sightedness), and astigmatism (basically an optical defect where your eye can't focus or something -_-).

LASIK surgery is usually done in three steps. Preoperative is performed (you guessed it) before the operation, and usually involves learning about the structure and deficiencies of the patient's eye. Next would be the operation, in which the patient is awake yet given some mild sedatives, as well as anesthetic eye-drops. The operation also involves three steps, which include:
  1. Create a flap of corneal tissue.
  2. Remodeling of the cornea underneath the flap with a laser.
  3. Repositioning of the flap.
Sounds simple, right? Well the final stage is postoperative care. This stage has patients taking antibiotics as well as anti-inflammatory eye drops for a few weeks. The patient is also asked to allow extra time for sleeping, as well as wear dark glasses to protect his/her eyes from bright lights. If that isn't silly enough, the patient is also given goggles to wear at night to prevent rubbing the eyes during sleep.

Most people who have undergone the surgery have been happy, with a 92-98% satisfaction rate. However, this doesn't mean LASIK is without its flaws. I will include a list posted on Wikipedia of the common complications:

Well, the worst part of it is, I wouldn't even qualify for LASIK xD. Apparently you need to have equal or better than 200/20 or so (don't know where I read that but I found it early in my research.. kind of bummed to be honest), whereas I have like 340/20 lol.

Oh well, it was still worth looking into. Do any of my readers that have had laser eye surgery get any of these side effects? If I could do it I would... :|

Thank you guys for the help in deciding, and of course, thank you guys for reading! ^_^

PS: apparently there is LASEK as well?? I'm going to do some reading on the differences..

Anyway, thanks again!

  9. My friend who lived in Korea with me was doing research on it and was going to have his surgery done in Korea since it was half the price. After doing more reading and talking with doctors he decided not to do it.

    I don't know why exactly.

Another friend did it years ago, no problems... But it depends on your profession... Sometimes it might be better not to do it.

    Me? Well, I'm too scared.

  11. I don't like the amount of times you used the word 'flap' in a discussion about eyes. I've never had a problem with my eyes though to be fair.

  20. *shudder* I think I'll stick with glasses. Can't say I'm a fan of the idea of having my eyes sliced up with a laser.

  21. My eyesight is pretty good, but if I happened to be near or far sighted, I might think of doing this. with a 92 - 98% satisfaction rate, it seems like something worthwhile, if you are either :

Sick of wearing glasses (For people that have had them for a long time) or
Worried about appearances with things like that.

    Good post
